Bong Joon Ho to Direct His First Animated Movie

Oscar-winning director Bong Joon-Ho is working on his first animated film. The Parasite director revealed the film would center on the dramatic relationship between human beings and deep-sea creatures.

Bong Joon-Ho won Oscar awards three times after the release of Parasite, making him a hot commodity in the industry. The comedy-thriller was the first-ever non-English film to win Best Picture and Best Director, Best International Feature Film, and Best Original Screenplay at once.

Since then, he has been working on other projects like the HBO series with Adam McKay. The series is based on the Best Picture Winner, and they also titled it “Parasite.” He also has other upcoming features, one in Korean and another in English.

According to Screen Daily, Bong Joon-Ho joined forces with the Korean VFX Production house 4th Creative Party to direct the animated film. Bong previously worked with the VFX Studio on his features “The Host,” “Snowpiercer,” and “Okja.” The Seoul-based studio also has branches in Busan and Beijing.

The director started working on the animation film in 2018 before Parasite’s production. He then completed writing its script in January. Presently, he is writing another script for an English live-action film which will be his next production, with the Korean animation due after that. Bong revealed that the English film would be following a true event that happened in 2006.

“It feels like I’m splitting my brain between half left and right writing these two scripts,” the director said concerning the two titles. “But I finished one last week.” Bong hinted at the existence of these two films backstage of the 2020 Oscars. He revealed one was a Korean movie “located in Seoul” with “unique elements of horror and action.”

After Parasite’s success, fans have been eagerly waiting for details concerning his next projects. This announcement is a change of genre that has been Bong’s trademark since he explores different fields in the industry.

While this is the first animated film for Bong, he has directed other movies on the same terrain like his monster film, The Host. The 2006 film also explored the relationship between deep-sea creatures and humans in an adversarial way.

The animation film’s casting, plot, and production details are not out yet since news just broke, so little is known about it. However, while the script is in Korean, there is a possibility that an English-speaking live-action will follow its incarnation.

A speculation of the animation’s style has also been seen in Okja, which he wrote with Ron Johnson, a British journalist. The film featured a lot of animation integrated with live-action elements. While not sure whether it will take this route or not, Bong will undoubtedly create an incredible title.

The talented director is having a busy year as he is working on multiple projects. He will also be serving as the president of the jury at Venice Film Festival 2021. This event is set to take place from September 1 to September 11.
